What does a Recruiter do?

Typically, a recruiter’s role is comprised of administration, business development and relationship building duties. The recruitment lifecycle encompasses six main stages:

  • Identifying and securing business from potential clients and working with the client to understand their hiring needs and criteria.
  • Sourcing and screening a list of active and passive candidates through a network of talent based on the criteria of the role set by the client – this can include a website, social media sites like Linkedin, and job sites like Reed and CV Library.
  • Guiding and advising candidates and the client through the interview, shortlisting and onboarding stages.

The Recruitment Lifecycle

Recruitment positions commonly fall into 3 categories

1. Recruitment Resourcer

This is known as a 180 role as it encompasses half of the recruitment life cycle; all the candidate-facing aspects of the process. This involves identifying, attracting, screening and short-listing candidates from job sites, social media and other platforms.

Job progression: Senior Resourcer / Salary Range: £20k – £40k + Bonus

2. Delivery Consultant

Often called a 270 role, a Delivery Consultant works with a couple of key client accounts. They work to understand the client’s hiring needs and then to identify, source and screen suitable candidates to put forward.

Job progression: Senior Delivery Consultant, Principal Delivery Consultant or Account Manager / Salary Range: £30k – £45k + Bonus

3. Recruitment Consultant

This is the role that encompasses the entire lifecycle of the recruitment process; the 360 role. As well as the candidate-facing responsibilities, a Recruitment Consultant carries out the business development (BD) activities of reaching out to potential clients, selling their agency, and getting the Terms of Business signed. They will also be responsible for keeping clients happy and engaged with the agency’s services.

When a recruiter start at a new agency, they will either have a hot desk or a cold desk. A hot desk will have a number of ‘live’ (active) roles for them to fill for clients that have already been engaged with and are signed up. A cold desk is the opposite; they will be starting from scratch to find new clients and build the business relationship from there.

Job progression: Senior Consultant, Principal Consultant, Associate Director, Account Director / Salary Range: £20k – £40k + Bonus
